Teaching Toni Morrison Series Kickoff marks the launch of a yearlong, virtual certification program designed for K–12 educators interested in continuing Toni Morrison’s legacy in the classroom.
Led by educator and scholar Tonya Abari, this kickoff session introduces participants to the structure and goals of Teaching Toni Morrison, a multi-part series that centers Morrison’s novels, children’s books, and other works written about her as tools for teaching literature, history, and culture. The program emphasizes thoughtful, interdisciplinary approaches to Morrison’s writing and its relevance to contemporary education.
Throughout the year, the series will include immersive workshops such as Teaching with Morrison’s Picture Books, Morrison in the South, Centering Black Girlhood, Cooking with Toni Morrison, History x Math, and more. The kickoff provides an overview of the curriculum, expectations, and opportunities for educators participating nationwide.
The virtual kickoff will take place on January 21, 2026, from 6:00–7:30 PM and is open to adult educators. This pre-launch event serves as an entry point for teachers seeking deeper engagement with Morrison’s work and its lasting impact on education.
