About

Take part in a five-week exploration of Toni Morrison’s Beloved, led by Marianne Cotugno, Professor of English at Miami University. Meeting online each Monday, the course will examine Morrison’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel through its storytelling, historical context, and engagement with the American past.

Set in the aftermath of slavery and rooted in a true historical story, Beloved asks readers to confront questions of memory, trauma, freedom, and what it means to live with the past. Participants will read and discuss the novel together while exploring its historical context, including its connections to Ohio.

Presented by Miami University’s Institute for Learning in Retirement, the course meets Mondays from October 5 through November 2, from 10:45 AM to noon Eastern via Zoom. Participants may use any edition of Beloved.
