Nobel Prize-winning author Toni Morrison is not often described as a nature writer, yet her work is deeply rooted in the
natural world. A lifelong gardener and observer of nature, Morrison wove powerful ecological lessons into her storytelling, exploring memory, land, and humanity’s connection to the earth.
This poetry workshop invites participants to reflect on Morrison’s insights alongside poems from The Nature of Our Times: Poems on America’s Lands, Waters, Wildlife, and Other Natural Wonders, an anthology compiled by Poets for Science, United By Nature, and the Wick Poetry Center. Together, participants will create original poems that engage the “beauty business” of language, nature, and reflection.
Participants may attend one or both sessions:
- In-person: Saturday, March 14, 2026, from 11:00 AM–1:00 PM at Cleveland Public Library’s West Park Branch (3805 W. 157th St., Cleveland)
- Virtual: Monday, March 23, 2026, from 6:30–8:30 PM via Zoom
The workshop will be led by poets Julia Cilano and Siaara Freeman and is presented in partnership with the Wick Poetry Center and Cleveland Public Library.
