On Wednesday, February 18, 2026, Ohio will officially launch Beloved: Ohio Celebrates Toni Morrison, a yearlong, statewide celebration honoring the life, literature, and legacy of Toni Morrison, Lorain, Ohio native and the first Black woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature.
The kickoff event will take place in Columbus and will bring together writers, scholars, artists, educators, and community members from across the state to mark the beginning of this historic initiative.
At the heart of the evening is a featured conversation between acclaimed writers Hanif Abdurraqib and Namwali Serpell, exploring Morrison’s work, her enduring influence, and what it means to read her in this moment. The program will also include music, reflection, and an invitation into the many ways communities across Ohio will engage with Morrison’s legacy throughout the year.
The in-person gathering is by invitation only, with limited capacity.
The event will be livestreamed statewide, with virtual registration available for those who wish to attend online. Details on how to register and access the livestream will be shared soon.
From February 18, 2026 through February 18, 2027, communities across Ohio will host readings, performances, discussions, educational programs, and creative projects inspired by Toni Morrison’s work. This kickoff marks the beginning of that shared journey.
